Peer Reviews of First Cut Movie Opener

Peer Reviews of First Cut Movie Opener

1. First Cut- Betrayed Shadows

For this film, I felt like the acting was very good and that I greatly appreciated the camerawork. I felt there was a wide variety of shots from close up shots to establishing shots, which really helped me get to know the characters and the setting. It did seem like a true movie opener and made me want to know what happened next as in this film, a hooded male suddenly grabs a female and then the camera shakes before the film's end. I would want to know if he is able to successfully kidnap her or if she can defend herself from him. A critique I have is that I had difficulty hearing due to the background noise in the outdoor area they were filming.

2. The Entity After Hours (Media Studies First Cut)

For this film, I really appreciated the changes in settings which showed the characters' dedication to helping Maya fix her own grades via dishonest means. I also appreciated the suspense of once they successful in sneaking into their teacher's class, the lights went off. It truly felt like the opening to a movie being released in theater. I would watch it if it were a real movie getting released in theater because I'd want to know why the lights randomly went off in the teacher's classroom and if they were ever able to successfully hack their teacher's online gradebook without getting caught. One critique I have is it was difficult to hear in the beginning scene in the media center due to background noise.

3. First Cut of Movie Opener AICE MEDIA STUDIES

For this film, I appreciated the plot of a girl who went missing and appreciated the twist at the end where her necklace and possible coordinates to follow her location were found. I also felt that the acting was very good. It did come off like a true movie opener to a real film, and I would want to know if they are able to successfully find the missing girl once they receive her coordinates, if she has sustained any injuries, has the same personality, or if she has died. However, I feel that there should have been a wider range of camera shots to truly enhance the film. I also think a suspenseful music soundtrack would have added more depth to the film.

4. First Cut: Mind the Gaps - YouTube

For this film, I felt that the acting was phenomenal. The ringing sound added suspense to the film and showed how the therapist's client seems "off". I felt that zooming in on the notes the therapist was writing was a good move for the plot and added depth to the film opening. Zooming on the client's computer with her emails open was also a good move because it showed her poor mental health as she had several emails from a psychiatrist and the pharmacy telling her to pick up antipsychotic medication. However, I feel that there are too many close-up shots and there should be more range in the types of camera shots. Something that left me confused is the role her mental health plays in the film and why it is important to the plot that she is mentally unstable. However, it does look like a true movie opener and I would watch it to see if the client is able to get better mentally and why her being in a bad mental state adds significance to the film plot.

5. Two Peas in a Pod

For this film, I felt that the acting was amazing. The "duo within the trio" feeling was well-captured by the dialogue, where the two friends were talking about their plans in front of their third friend, who they excluded with the excuse they assumed he has no time to go. The close-up shots of the hurt expression on the third friend's face also added to this storyline. I felt that it looks like a true movie opener and I would want to watch it in theater. I really liked how the third friend/actor was whispering in a way the audience couldn't make out what he was saying, inciting the audience's curiosity. However, I truly believe there should have been music and editing to make the sound of the doors quieter.

6. AICEProjektpt1

For this film, I felt there was a lot that needed to be improved. For one, audio was needed for dialogue and possibly a soundtrack. Secondly, a wider diversity of camera shots were needed since nearly all of them were close up. I do not understand what is happening in this clip. It does not look like a true movie opener since true movie openers have sound, dialogue, and the audience has at least a brief understanding of the plot. However, I liked the atmosphere of the film with the low-key lighting outside at 0:20-0:37. It added a nice vibe to the film and it truly has potential to be a great movie opener if several improvements are made.

7. Chasing Shadows First Cut

For this film, I appreciated the usage of the establishing shot of the spartan statue and the usage of the establishing shot. For what needs to improved, there is a lot of background noise that makes the dialogue difficult to hear, I would recommend trying to film when it's quieter or to use a better editing program to cut background noise. Additionally, I don't understand why one of the actors had 2 completely different outfits in the film on as the timing for this clip was supposed to only be a day. For consistency, each actor should agree on a "filming outfit" and stick to it. This did not feel like a true movie opener since there wasn’t really music or clearly heard dialogue, as I mentioned they should refilm when it’s quieter so the dialogue can be more clearly heard.
