Sample Exam Question B

 Sample Exam Question B

Over the years, new technologies have caused many changes to society. For example, the rise of technology has created several new jobs. This has caused significant economic development. In the film world, many believe that new technologies have made audiences more complex and unpredictable. I agree with this statement.

Due to the rise of technology and all the new features available in film, I believe audiences have higher expectations of movies nowadays than in earlier decades. According to the case study: Case Study for Question 2 Media Studies.pdf, the Walt Disney Company was founded on October 16, 1923. The first movie ever made and released by the Walt Disney Company was the animated film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", on December 21, 1937. This film was considered groundbreaking and ahead of its time due to it being in full color due to the technology, Technicolor (Snow White becomes highest-grossing animated film of all time during this era | Technicolor Group). For many people, this was the first in-color film they have ever seen. This also helped boost the reputation of the Walt Disney Company, and it became a major popular film company among the public audience.

However, I do not believe a modern audience would be as easily impressed by this movie. This is because the animation wasn't as detailed as today's animations are. In the film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", the animations were hand-drawn. However, current films made by the Walt Disney Company use very advanced CGI technology. A huge way that they have gotten their CGI technology was from their acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios in 2006, which was renowned for their skills in computer animation. This caused the Walt Disney Company to have in-house access to Pixar Animation Studios' computer animation technology. Another way the film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", was limited was in its special effects. However, the Walt Disney Company also acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, bringing the Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), which is a renowned special effects company that use effects such as motion control cameras, into their realm. Therefore, due to all these new technologies, a modern audience to a Walt Disney film (or film in general) would expect much more visually and special effects wise from a film today.

To conclude, I agree with the statement that new technologies have made audiences more complex and unpredictable. This is because many special effects and computer animations exist now that didn't exist several decades prior that make current films have much more detailed and realistic appearances. In 1937, when the film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was released, the animations were hand-drawn and the mere fact that this film was in color was considered revolutionary. However, current audiences would not be as easily wowed, making their expectations more complex and unpredictable.
